Welcoming/Water Ceremony

Location: 223 West St, New York, NY 10013

Time: 9/20/14   10am – 12pm

what’s gonna happen?

Native and non-native representatives fighting against Transcanada XL wanted to recognize the local people of this territory and give some gifts to them. So in the morning there will be a short (10min) press briefing, starting at 1030am, featuring some of the SD Delegation, (possibly FN Tar Sands reps) and non-natives. They will briefly talk about why they have come to be in the PCM. This press briefing will happen on a boat, The Lilac.

After this briefing – we will move off the boat to a location on the pier nearby and proceed with the gift-giving. There will be local tribal leader from the Lenape nation who will be present to receive our delegations gifts. He will then officially welcome us to his peoples territories. (This is will take about 10-15 mins.)

After this gift-giving – We will immediately go into the actual water ceremony, conducted by Josephine Mandamin. This ceremony will be open to all of us.

This event is important to us as native people. It will ground us in the work we will be doing here for the next few days. There will be representatives from the Amazon, Africa, and the Pacific Islands.
